Of judges and dreams fulfilled

Achelis Santana Javier, with her formal position as a young lawyer, prepares to go to NYRDMUN, an event that brings together more than five hundred students from various study centers, to represent the Dominican Republic.

Achelis Santana is a 20 - year - old graduate of the fifth home of the Children 's Home promotion in 2013 and is also a beneficiary of the Eastern Benelux Scholarship Program at the Central University of the East , Where he attends the four-month period of his law degree.

In February of this year, Achelis had the opportunity to participate in a university debate, organized by the United Nations Model Club of the Central Eastern University. Considering his performance on "Eliminating the Right to Veto in the Security Council of the United Nations" was awarded the mention of "Best Posture", in addition to participating in the winning group of the first place.

As a result of this distinction, the Central University of the East selected the young man along with three students to represent him in the New York-Dominican Republic Model of the United Nations (Model of the United Nations of New York and the Dominican Republic). NYRDMUN is an event in which more than 500 students from various centers of studies and universities in the Dominican Republic simulate more than ten United Nations bodies and committees dealing with topics of current interest in the international community.

Achelis, who has been participating in United Nations models for years, describes this event as a dream come true, as it not only symbolizes a great step for his professional and personal growth, but is an opportunity to represent the PBO and his beloved Home of the Child, to which he attributes the success he enjoys today. "I will be participating in the International Court of Justice, I will be acting as a judge of this court, that is to say that from now on I will be projecting or working with something that is totally related to law, the career I study", as Court Judge International Justice, Achelis will be developed in the same scenario in which hundreds of heads of state and important personalities have made historical decisions that have affected the landscape of international relations.

Despite the fact that international models are a simulation, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE), the organization sponsoring this event, takes proposals for solutions that expose young people during NYRDMUN and refers them to the United Nations as plausible measures Which can be taken in cases of conflicts between states. "We as Dominicans are perhaps going to treat issues as a conflict in a country as far away as the Republic of Congo, or Syria, but we can bring those proposals and maybe apply them to our society." This is why Achelis argues It is extremely important that young Dominicans be encouraged to participate in this type of initiative and activities, as it fosters an interest in finding solutions to the problems that currently affect Dominican and international society.

Once the assembly begins, the International Court of Justice model, to which Achelis would be a part, will address the cases "Maritime Delimitation in the Indian Ocean", "Kenya against Somalia", "Armed Activities in the Republic of Congo" and "La Democratic Republic of the Congo v. Uganda ". "The judges of the court do not represent the interests of any nation even though they obviously have a nationality, they do not represent the interest of any nation." Our protagonist explains that the first step is to study the problem, guided by the Context that establishes the internal politics of the states involved, always taking into account that although the United Nations has the competence to recognize such conflicts, it should never affect the internal politics of a nation and its sovereignty, so that the court Is in accordance with the statutes established by international law so that they can propose the most factual proposals to solve the conflict.

"The PBO grant - I think that more than an opportunity has been a gift, because I believe that no one is totally deserving of being costed the university, however the PBO made the greatest effort to grant me that scholarship to study Something that I longed for and dreamed of doing, "he says. The graduate of Hogar del Niño School proves to be brilliant in the present, in order to participate in the NYRDMUN, but nevertheless says that after completing his university studies he longs to give back to the PBO, in any way possible, for the opportunity he has Received through his secondary studies and the scholarship of which he is a beneficiary.

In addition, he wishes to continue his studies through a master's degree in civil procedure, which he considers the main branch of law. When asked if he would be interested in participating in the country's politics, he replied, "Not now." "Maybe in a few years my mindset will change with respect to politics." Despite not wanting to enter the political arena, he insists on the importance of motivating young people to take an interest in the country's politics.
